HerSanctuary™, a female owned multi-faceted ministry, is designed to provide a pathway to renewal for women of all faiths, denominations, and walks of life through music and the spoken word. Founded in March of 2006, this ministry is focused on God's message of spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional healing (Isaiah 61:1-7).
HerSanctuary™ provides Praise and Worship, concerts, conferences and workshops nationwide. This ministry also provides opportunities for women who desire to uplift, build, and bond through the utilization of their God-given gifts and talents.
Lyn has been involved in music since the age of 9. She worked with many churches and gospel artists before forming HerSanctuary™, "I would get hired to do women's day programs, with the "whosoever band", and after a while, I decided there had to be other female musicians that were serious about their craft but just didn't get many opportunities. After playing in a concert with Co-Founder Michele, they decided to work together. "We started with a purpose, decided upon a name, prayed, and got to work". Lyn knew she could draw from her experience as drummer and manager of the Contemporary Jazz/R&B instrumental band, "In The Mix".
She had also run an independent music label, "It's About Time Records" and founded the Jonre Music Group(JMG) in 2002, that produced the independent film, "SOUNDCHECK". As a composer she developed an award-winning commercial and won 1st Place in a contest sponsored by Kirk Franklin, General Mills, and Jet Magazine. Lyn played all the instruments on the track. She studied music and communication and is a graduate of Brevard College and George Mason University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and BMI. "Music is what I was placed here to deliver". Through a good friend, she was introduced to Grammy Award Winner Roberta Flack. "I was gum on her shoe!" But she allowed me to stay, watch, and learn for 3 years. She was a great teacher of many things. "I learned a lot in her classroom of the world"!
Lyn comes from a musical family, with younger sibling Shelby holding it down as lead female vocalist in NPG with Grammy-Award Winner, Prince. "Once she did the Superbowl, I knew it was a wrap"! Lyn's advice to someone pursuing a dream is simple. "Know your purpose", believe in God's direction concerning that purpose, and hang on for the ride".
Michele says, "God implanted music in my spirit from the womb." Her love and passion for music has been cultivated through many experiences from a very young age. Michele's foundation started within the church in Queens, N.Y. at the age of five. She intensely studied classical piano and was accepted into the Julliard School of Music Pre-College Program for Young and Gifted Children at the age of 9. Although she chose not to attend the program, she continued to develop her piano skills. Michele attended Howard University in Washington, DC and decided to pursue a major in classical voice and minor in piano.
While at Howard, she studied with the renowned opera singers Regina McConnell, Carmen Balthrop and Charlotte Holloman. Under the tutelage of Dr. James Weldon Norris, Michele was introduced to conducting. She became the Assistant to the Conductor for the University Choirs. Upon traveling with the university choir nationally and internationally, Michele not only conducted but eventually became the lead soloist. These opportunities led her to performances in Russia, England, Spain, and the US Virgin Islands.
She received both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in music from Howard. After Howard, Michele continued her voice career while expanding her skills as a music teacher in the public school systems. Her desire to help young people has extended from the classroom into the community. Michele is a director for the Washington Performing Arts Society, Children of the Gospel, and a youth and young adult choir director at First Mt. Zion, in Dumfries, VA. She continues to find time to hold clinics for vocal health and wellness, voice and piano master classes, and guest directorships for gospel music workshops.
Michele is a member of and has received awards from various professional organizations as Delta Sigma Theta, Inc, Sigma Alpha Iota, and The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club. She also received the Mayor's Award (DC) for Arts Teacher of the Year (2006). Michele desires to reach the lives of millions of women, through HerSanctuary™, by helping them tap into their God-given gifts and talents and utilizing them for His purpose.
